Operational Devices Used by Security Officers

Operational Devices of Security Officers

In the process of political transition, due to the fact that the new security services were formed mainly from the assets of the former Communist security police, its archives and equipment were passed to the new service Urząd Ochrony Państwa (Office for State Protection), as well as to the police force, and were used relevantly. The technical-operational units of the former SB passed through the verification process almost untouched, and their equipment was used and replaced when worn out, redundant, antiquated, or inefficient. The Act forming the Institute of the National Remembrance did oblige state institutions to pass the archives and records of the former Communist security services to  IPN, but this obligation did not concern the services’ equipment. Both of the above-mentioned circumstances contribute to the fact that IPN does not have any special equipment or devices used formerly by the Communist secret services, except for few specimens.

For detailed information on the devices used by Communist security bodies, see Monika Komaniecka-Łyp’s paper "Polish Security Service Artifacts: Ministry of Internal Affairs (1956–1989): Operational Equipment and Its Presentation," in The International Journal of Intelligence, Security, and Public Affairs, vol. 22 (2020), issue 3: “Need to Know – Major Political Change and Access to Secrets”.
