An application to include the birch bark letters in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register

Today, 28 November, marks 2 years since 31 memory institutions from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine submitted to UNESCO an application to include the birch bark letters sent from GULAG prison camps in the Memory of the World Register. These letters symbolize human hope and the bond with loved ones even under the harshest conditions. We believe that the impact of this collection extends far beyond the nominating states, resonating with our common humanity and solidarity. We are convinced that this unique documentary heritage merits inscription to the Memory of the World Register, so that its significance may be recognized and shared with all humanity.
