‘Augustów round-up’
The “Augustów Manhunt” [also known as the “Augustów Round-up”] was an instance of the counter-insurgency joint co-operation of the security police and military. It was conducted by NKVD forces, the Red Army, and Smersh, as well as the Department of Security and the ‘people’s’ Polish Army. The raid lasted for two weeks (10–25 July 1945), and covered the area of Augustów Forest and nearby villages. The operation targeted members of independence underground organisations and persons suspected by the Soviets and domestic communists of supporting underground members. About 7,000 persons were arrested, and from among those, more than 600 were taken to an unknown place. Soviet records researched show that they were murdered by Smersh. Their remains have never been recovered. More than 250 Lithuanians arrested were handed over to the security police of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic.
