How we address the public
The Federal Archives/Stasi Documents Archive publishes series and individual studies on the history and structure of the MfS, on basic research on GDR state security, on political education and on archival topics. Basic documents are published in collections of sources, which contain information on the status, tasks and functioning of the MfS. They are intended to make it easier to evaluate the sources of Stasi documents.
In the "Sources for Schools" series, the education team has published excerpts from original Stasi files. In most cases, the specific cases involve young people who, for various reasons, have become the focus of the State Security Service. The file excerpts are supplemented with a list of abbreviations and worksheets for individual and group work. The “Thematic Folders” of the Stasi Records Archive are a collection of excerpts from files on one aspect of the history of the State Security Service of the GDR prepared for schoolchildren. The subject here is not individual cases or destinies, but rather historical events or contexts. The file excerpts are suitable for individual or small group work. Short introductory texts explain the historical context.
Permanent, temporary and touring exhibitions of the Federal Archives/Stasi Records Archive impart basic knowledge about the GDR state security and show the effects of their work using biographical and region-specific examples: In the "Stasi headquarters. Campus for Democracy” two permanent exhibitions provide information on the history and functioning of the GDR state security as well as work of today’s Stasi documents archive. Exhibitions about the work of the Stasi are available to interested institutions and individuals in various formats for free borrowing. The touring exhibition "Enemy is who thinks differently" has been providing information about the history and operation of the Stasi in Germany and abroad since 2008.
